The Golden Trumpet (Allamanda cathartica) is a fast-growing woody vine prized for its prolific blooming and ornamental beauty. Thriving in tropical environments, it produces clusters of brilliant yellow flowers that can reach up to 4 inches across. It is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to create a “living wall” or a lush, flowering screen that stays green all year round.
Why the Golden Trumpet belongs in your garden:
-
Year-Round Bloomer: In our warm climate, this plant can produce flowers almost continuously throughout the year.
-
Vigorous Climber: Quickly covers fences or structures with beautiful foliage and vibrant blooms.
-
Low Maintenance: Once established, it is remarkably hardy and thrives in tropical heat.
-
Pollinator Magnet: The bright yellow trumpets are a favorite for local butterflies and bees.
Detailed Planting & Care Instructions:
-
Germination: Soak the seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting. Sow them in a well-draining seed starting mix, about 1 cm deep. Keep the soil consistently moist. Given our natural warmth, germination usually occurs within 3 to 6 weeks.
-
Light & Location: This plant is a sun-lover. It needs a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce the best flowers.
-
Soil & Drainage: Allamanda prefers rich, organic soil but must have excellent drainage. It does not like sitting in waterlogged soil, especially during the heavy rains of the wet season.
-
Support: Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or arbor for the vine to climb. You may need to loosely tie the young shoots to the support to guide them initially.
-
Pruning: Prune whenever the plant becomes too bushy or to encourage new growth and more flowers. It can also be maintained as a shrub if you prefer not to let it climb.
-
Note: The milky sap can be irritating to the skin; wearing gloves while pruning is recommended.
