2. Planting: Choosing the Right Spot
In our tropical climate, the biggest challenge for Arabica is the intense midday sun.
- Light: Arabica thrives in “filtered sunlight.” Plant your seedlings in an area that gets gentle morning sun but is shaded from the harsh afternoon heat (12:00 PM to 4:00 PM).
- Spacing: If planting in the ground, ensure at least 1.5 to 2 meters of space between plants to allow for proper airflow, which helps prevent fungal issues during the humid rainy season.
- Potting: If you are gardening in pots, ensure your containers have excellent drainage holes to avoid root suffocation.
3. Care and Maintenance in the Tropics
Our local weather requires a specific maintenance rhythm:
- Watering: During the dry season (summer), water your coffee plants daily, preferably early in the morning. During the rainy season, watch for over-saturation; the soil should remain moist, not swampy.
- Fertilizing: Arabica plants love nutrients. Use organic compost or a balanced NPK fertilizer every 3–4 months to support lush green growth.
- Pruning: Once your plant reaches about 1 meter in height, you can tip the main stem to encourage branching. This creates a bushier plant and makes harvesting much easier later on.
